RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) — The official Saudi Press Agency has reported that five people were executed in various parts of the kingdom on Tuesday.
That brings the total number of people executed since Jan. 1 to 69, according to an Associated Press tally based on official announcements.
A Jordanian and a Saudi were executed Tuesday after being found guilty in separate trials of smuggling large quantities of amphetamines into the kingdom.
According to statements on SPA, a Qatari national and two Saudis were also Tuesday executed after being found guilty of murder in separate trials.
On Jan. 2, Saudi Arabia executed 47 people in one day. Most were alleged al-Qaida militants, in addition to a prominent Shiite cleric convicted for his role in anti-government protests.
