Tunisia, where the Arab Spring uprising began, was seen as the region's biggest success story because of its relatively peaceful transition to democracy. But the September 14 attacks on the U.S. embassy and an American school in Tunis were a wake-up call to the world. A growing legion of hardline Islamists will pose a serious threat to stability in Tunisia over the coming years and may eventually succeed in overthrowing the moderate Islamist government. If the hardliners have their way, this former French colony, for years a prime destination for European tourists, will be transformed; and not for the better.
