National Security Adviser Robert O'Brien has issued doubt China has been forthright with respect to its self-reporting of confirmed cases and deaths during the global coronavirus pandemic.

"No. 1, the president has a great relationship with President Xi, and we'd like have a great relationship with China," O'Brien told the coronavirus task force daily briefing Wednesday. "Unfortunately, we're not in any position to confirm any of the numbers coming out of China. There's no way to confirm any of those numbers."

O'Brien admitted the public reports suggest some under reporting of cases and death, but he could not verify the veracity of the reports. China has admitted it did not include confirmed-case totals of asymptomatic patients, which it said it will not start doing.

"There's lots of public reporting on whether the numbers are too low," O'Brien added. "You've got access to the reports coming out of the Chinese social media, and some of the few reporters left in China. We just have no way to confirm any of those numbers."

Amid the pandemic and reports China might have covered up the depths of the pandemic where it started in Wuhan, China, China has pulled credentials of U.S. media members.

"We really don't know," President Donald Trump added. "How do we know whether they under reported?"
