Over 200 million students in China are studying from home as officials take extreme measures to contain the coronavirus outbreak that has killed 1,772 and infected 71,000-plus worldwide, reports The Washington Post.

School children were supposed to head back Feb. 16 following the winter holidays, but the Chinese Ministry of Education in late January postponed the start of the spring semester because of the coronavirus, which started in Wuhan.

But the MoE on Monday introduced a "national Internet cloud classroom" supported by more than 7,000 servers so children can log on to access teaching materials and courses. Lessons cover 12 academic subjects, including "moral education" and "epidemic education," per the Post.

The setup is not great – many families do not have computers, some are not technologically savvy, the Internet connection is weak in some remote locations, and some parents cannot supervise children learning during the workday.

In Shenzhen, a male teacher tried to remain upbeat.

"Nobody knows for sure when we can return to school eventually, but we are doing the best we can to engage our students and keep things going," the person, who gave only his family name as Yang, told the Post.
