Sudan Activists Say Protester Killed by Paramilitary Forces

Sunday, 14 July 2019 02:37 PM EDT

CAIRO (AP) — Sudanese activists say paramilitary forces have shot dead a protester amid clashes in a southeastern province.

The Sudan Doctors' Committee, a medical affiliate of the Sudanese Professionals' Association, which has spearheaded the protests, says at least seven people were wounded. It says the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces opened fire on protesters in the town of Suki in Sennar province, 360 kilometers (224 miles) southeat of Khartoum.

A protester, Essam al-Mahdi, says Sunday's demonstration was against the RSF's alleged violence toward peaceful protests. He says protesters are calling for the troops to return to their barracks.

Protesters accuse the RSF of leading the nationwide crackdown, and the SPA says the force should be disbanded.

The RSF is led by deputy head of the ruling military council, Gen. Mohammed Hamadan Dagalo.
