Monday, 11 January 2016 09:48 PM EST

BEIRUT (AP) — Lebanon has arrested a suspect in connection with a pair of suicide bombings in November that that killed some 50 people in a Shiite neighborhood of Beirut.

Security officials say the man, who they named as Abu Talha, was arrested in a raid at dawn Sunday in the northern city of Tripoli and belonged to a group that was also planning other attacks around the country.

The twin suicide bombings, claimed by the extremist Islamic State group, struck a crowded Shiite neighborhood south of the capital, shattering a relative calm in the country that had held for more than a year despite the civil war raging in neighboring Syria.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief reporters.
