AMMAN, Jordan (AP) — Jordanian unions have called for a one-day strike next week, amid a groundswell of protests against planned tax increases.

Thousands have taken to the streets across Jordan in recent days in the largest anti-government protests in several years, demanding that the tax plan be scrapped. In some areas, protesters burned tires and clashed with police.

Protesters demand that the government step down, with anger stoked by recent fuel price increases and subsidy cuts.

Western supporters of the kingdom view signs of social unrest with concern. Jordan is a key military ally, including in the fight against Islamic militants.

More anti-government marches were planned later Sunday.

Ali Abous, head of an umbrella group for 15 unions and professional associations with half a million members, says a strike is planned for Wednesday.
