Kenya has begun its crackdown on anyone not wearing a mask, imposing penalties as serious as a fine and even a jail sentence, according to Fox News.
Under the new order, people who are caught in public without a mask will get hit with a $200 fine and up to six months of jail time, or both. That includes anyone sitting in their own vehicle.
"Now it is compulsory to put the face masks [on]," police inspector general Hillary Mutyambai said during a news conference Wednesday. "I've instructed the police officers to enforce this."
Kenya has also put in place a stringent three-week lockdown, which started March 27 and is scheduled to end April 17.
This means no railroad operations or flights in or out of the Nairobi area.
Public officials in the African nation have put in place social distancing rules requiring people to stay six feet away from one another in public spaces.
"Users of public or private transport and public transport operators shall wear proper masks that must cover the mouth and nose," Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe said over the weekend, the Daily Nation newspaper reports. "They should also maintain a physical distance of not less than a meter."
So far, the country has reported 225 confirmed coronavirus cases, including 10 deaths, according to the latest update from Johns Hopkins University.
