Cow Escapes Farm to Run Free with Wild Bison in Poland

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — A farmyard cow in Poland has chosen freedom this winter, roaming with a herd of bison for three months after escaping its pen.

The cow has been spotted following the bison across meadows bordering the Bialowieza Forest in eastern Poland as they forage for food.

Rafal Kowalczyk, a bison expert with the Polish Academy of Sciences, says the situation is exceptional and funny — but also dangerous.

Kowalczyk says if the cow mates with male bison and gets pregnant she could die during delivery because her offspring would be bigger than a normal cow calf.

He also said bison-cow hybrids could contaminate the tiny and endangered bison population of eastern Poland.

He said scientists will try to remove the cow from the bison herd by summer.
