THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — The Netherlands' main intelligence agency says it is seeing an increase in the volume and complexity of attempts at digital espionage, online political manipulation and moves toward sabotage of infrastructure in Europe.

In its annual report for 2017 published Tuesday, the General Intelligence and Security Service says that a growing number of foreign powers are using cyber espionage "to acquire information that they use for (geo) political gain."

The agency says that "in particular, Russia is extremely driven in the covert digital influencing of (political) decision making processes" and public opinion in other countries.

The report adds that digital espionage also is being used to infiltrate European multinationals, research institutes and the energy, high-tech and chemicals sectors, saying that "terabytes of confidential information" have been stolen in the hacks.
