The Obama administration and the Nigerian government refuse to formally declare the militant Islamist group Boko Haram a terrorist organization, despite the fact that the group has waged a bloody campaign against Christians that includes church bombings and raids on Christian villages. While U.S. officials and some Nigerians oppose a U.S. terrorist designation because they claim it could make things worse for Nigeria’s Christians, U.S. oil imports from Nigeria also appear to be a major factor.
