Blinken Warns of 'Implications' of China Siding With Russia

By    |   Friday, 23 September 2022 02:58 PM EDT

Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Friday warned his Chinese counterpart, Foreign Minister Wang Yi, of the "implications" if China supports Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and also reiterated the United States' commitment to "peace and security" concerning Taiwan, according to a readout of their meeting on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.

"He also reiterated the United States' condemnation of Russia's war against Ukraine and highlighted the implications if the PRC were to provide support to Moscow's invasion of a sovereign state," according to the statement, issued by State Department Press Spokesman Ned Price and shared on Twitter by Wall Street Journal Reporter Vivian Salama.

"He underscored that the United States remains open to cooperating with the PRC where our interests intercept," the statement concluded.

But when it comes to China and Taiwan, Blinken "emphasized that the United States is committed to maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, consistent with our longstanding 'One China' policy," the readout said.

"The secretary stressed that preserving peace and stability across the Taiwan Strati is critical to regional and global security and prosperity," the statement added.

A senior administration official said Taiwan was the focus of the "direct and honest" talks between Blinken and Wang, which went on for 90 minutes, reports Reuters.

"For our part, the secretary made crystal clear that, in accordance with our long-standing One China policy, which again has not changed, the maintenance of peace and stability across the strait is absolutely, vitally important," the official told reporters.

The talks took place while tensions are high between China and the U.S., after President Joe Biden reiterated earlier this month, during an interview on CBS's "60 Minutes," that the U.S. will defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese attack.
