CHICAGO — The future of the NATO alliance has once again been thrown into doubt, this time following the announcement of the withdrawal of all forces from Afghanistan by 2014. It’s undeniable: NATO is the most successful military alliance in the history of the world. But why keep it around now? It will be harder to find funding to support any alliance action, especially in far-flung places like Afghanistan . And besides, the Europeans don’t really like it.
