Costly Crossing: London Bridge Project Closed Down

LONDON (AP) — Supporters of a proposed footbridge and public garden in London spanning the River Thames have abandoned the project after support from the city withered away.

The trust established to build the Garden Bridge, which would have linked Temple with South Bank, shut down Monday after failing to secure guarantees for annual maintenance costs.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan had refused to allocate more public money to the idea, despite the support of predecessor Boris Johnson. Khan's refusal followed an independent report critical of the project.

The report concluded there was too much uncertainty about the final cost. The project was set to cost 60 million pounds ($77.8 million), but the report said it would end up costing more than 200 million pounds.

The trust described it as "sad day" for London.
