Utah Gov. Expected to Sign Abstinence-Only Curriculum Into Law

By    |   Thursday, 08 March 2012 11:16 AM EST

Republican Utah Gov. Gary Herbert is expected to sign a bill mandating abstinence-only sex education that bars the discussion of homosexuality from the curriculum for the state’s public schools, reports USA Today.

Restrictions in the bill, which the Legislature passed Tuesday, include instruction in sexual intercourse, contraceptive methods, sexual activity outside of marriage, and homosexuality.

Republican State Rep. Bill Wright said he sponsored the bill because he objected to the teaching of what he considers inappropriate material, specifically that originating from Planned Parenthood.

Under present law, parents who find the program objectionable can choose to keep their children from attending.
