A planned speech by conservative commentator Ann Coulter at the home of the free speech movement has been canceled out of protest fears.
Coulter was slated to speak at the University of California, Berkeley next week after the Berkeley College Republicans invited her. But the school, which prides itself on being open to free speech regardless of viewpoint, said the event cannot be held on campus because of the potential for violent protests between groups that support Coulter and those that disagree with her.
In an email to the Los Angeles Times, UC Berkeley spokesman Dan Mogulof said there have been threats against the event.
"Last week posters threatening disruption of the event appeared on the walls of campus buildings, and [Tuesday] night new, targeted threats were discovered" online, Mogulof said.
The Times notes that the Berkeley College Republicans will still host Coulter on April 27, but her speech will take place off campus.
Protesters for and against President Donald Trump clashed violently over the weekend in Berkley, an incident that included fights and fireworks being thrown into the crowd.
In February, a planned appearance at UC Berkeley by former Breitbart News editor and provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos was canceled after violent protests erupted.
