Tea Party Groups: Socialist UN Effort Trickles Down to US Local Governments

Wednesday, 06 July 2011 03:54 PM EDT

Tea party groups are riled about a United Nations environmental initiative that they say smacks of socialism and one-world government. The U.N. website describes the initiative, labeled Agenda 21, as “a comprehensive plan of action to be taken globally, nationally and locally” in all areas where humans have an environmental impact.

Almost 180 nations, including the United States, adopted it in 1992, and reaffirmed it a decade later. The initiative has been creeping into local governments in the United States, warned a July 2 editorial in the Tea Party Tribune.

“There are people on the left side of the political spectrum — who may even believe they have good intentions — working together to spread their vision for society worldwide,” the Tribune editorial states. “Whether they meet in dark rooms or openly in public meetings is irrelevant; they are having great success convincing local governments in the U.S. to adopt their socialist and extreme environmentalist programs under the guise of feel-good buzz words.”

Tea party activist Cheryl Pass of North Carolina said Agenda 21 uses the cause of environmentalism to disguise more sinister intentions, according to DailyCaller.com, which quoted her statements at a June event.

“Agenda 21 usurps sovereignty, property rights, economic liberty, and basically hands over power, resources, and land to unelected elitists . . . to control the populations of every country in the world,” Pass said. “Agenda 21 purports to address environmental issues, but calls for wealth redistribution, resource redistribution, food redistribution, energy restrictions, supposed social justice, and more. It is not about the environment, though it pretends to be.”
International public policy consultant Wendell Cox downplayed the one-world angle, telling the Caller urban planners at the local level are the ones imposing green agendas, having been “misled by radical environmentalists.”

“We need to make sure we understand what we are fighting here, and we are not fighting the United Nations,” Cox said.
