160 Safely Evacuated from Stopped Maine Ski Lift

Saturday, 19 February 2011 03:49 PM EST

NEWRY, Maine (AP) — About 160 people have been evacuated from a chair lift at Maine's Sunday River ski resort. No one was injured.

A resort spokeswoman says the malfunction happened late Saturday morning on the South Ridge Express quad lift. Skiers were evacuated from the lift in about an hour.

Spokeswoman Darcy Morse says a bearing in the system that moves the chairs failed, triggering a safety device that automatically stopped the lift. She says the bearing has since been replaced and the chairlift has reopened.

Eight people were hurt in December at Maine's Sugarloaf ski resort after a lift cable popped out of place and caused five chairs to plummet to the ground.

The two resorts are about 85 miles apart.
