President Joe Biden is determined to get the $1.9 trillion spending package signed, sealed, and delivered soon so a "large majority" of Americans eligible for $1,400 checks will receive them before the end of the March, according to White House press secretary Jen Psaki on Monday.
"We expect a large majority of Americans to receive relief by the end of the month," Psaki told reporters at the daily briefing. "But in terms of the mechanics of it, Treasury just has to work through that. An update will likely come from them, but we will keep you all abreast of it."
Psaki stressed the bill still needs to return to pass again through the House and arrive at the president's desk for an official signature, something that was hoped to be done by March 14.
"The president is taking nothing for granted," she added. "I will note the plan that the Senate passed this weekend puts us one huge step closer to passing one of the most consequential and most progressive pieces of legislation in American history."
A typical family of four making $100,000 a year will get $5,600 in direct checks, which will help "cut child poverty in half this year," Psaki hailed.
The president's signature on the impact payment direct checks from the IRS was a point of contention for Democrats during the Trump administration, but the White House declined to acknowledge whether President Biden's name will appear.
"It is a very popular question," Psaki said. "I will tell you our focus right now is getting this bill across the finish line, getting relief out to the American people, which we expect will happen by the end of the month – in terms of getting the relief out. In terms of what the checks will look like, I just don't have an update on that for you today."
