CDC Identifies States at Highest Risk for School Virus Outbreaks

With children in several states attending in-person schooling at least part of the time, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has identified which areas of the country are at the greatest risk for having COVID-19 spread at school.

Axios cited the CDC analysis, which showed that states in the South and Midwest are at the highest risk. A color-coded map illustrates the findings.

States that are particularly risky include Missouri, Alabama, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Arkansas, and Iowa, according to the data. At the other end of the risk spectrum are Connecticut, Washington, D.C., New York, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine, and Vermont.

The Washington Post reported this week, meanwhile, that no major outbreaks have been reported around school reopenings thus far. Schools nationwide have enacted strict protocols to guard against the coronavirus, which involve checking temperatures before and during school, requiring masks, social distancing, and ordering anyone with the virus or suspected of having it to quarantine.
