China will be held accountable if it's proven that the novel coronavirus infecting people around the world originated in a laboratory in Wuhan rather than in one of its wet markets, Sen. Marco Rubio said Thursday.
“If that is what happened, and we’ve got to wait and see if that is in fact what happened, there is no doubt that China will be held accountable not just by the United States but by the world,” the Florida Democrat told Fox Business’ Maria Bartiromo.
Several sources have told Fox News that they are theorizing that the virus initially transmitted from bat to a "patient zero" who worked at the laboratory, who then carried it into the population in Wuhan.
China has covered up essential facts about the coronavirus, said Rubio, which has "set the world back by days and weeks in terms of its response."
Rubio added that the pandemic also has reminded people that overall national economic security depends on the ability to make things.
"That is true no matter what country you are talking about," Rubio said, adding that the United States has become so dependent on the Chinese industrial capacity, and has put itself in a precarious situation.
He told Bartiromo he's now hoping for a "broad consensus in this country" that it has to be able to depend on its own domestic capacity.
