Poll: 'You Didn't Build That Line' Falls Flat for Romney

By    |   Wednesday, 03 October 2012 12:09 PM EDT

Despite Mitt Romney’s campaign efforts to use President Barack Obama’s “You didn’t build that” line to paint him as anti-business, a new poll shows the effort fell flat, Politico reported.

The line, it turns out, is not a net negative for Obama among those asked in the latest NBC/Wall Street Journal poll. Respondents were read the lines in context and asked how that changed their views of Obama, with 36 percent saying it made them feel more positively about Obama, 32 percent saying it made them view him more negatively and 26 percent saying it made no difference.

Urgent Poll: Romney Vs. Obama – VOTE NOW!

In a July 13 speech in Roanoke, Va., the president said, “If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.”

The Romney campaign and Republicans have made great political hay saying the comments show Obama is anti-business. The campaign focused on the remarks during the Republican National Convention, making it a theme of an entire day and several speakers referenced the line.
