Real estate heir Robert Durst reportedly donated money to the Democratic Party around the same time he allegedly committed two murders, for one of which he was arrested over the weekend, according to a report.
Durst was the subject of an HBO documentary in which he acknowledged that he "killed them all." He is suspected of murdering a total of three people. The finale of the six-part series aired Sunday, and he was captured on a hot mic essentially admitting to the murders.
Durst was arrested Saturday night in connection with one of the murders.
The Daily Caller cites Federal Election Commission records that show Durst gave a total of $625 to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in 2000. In 1996, he donated $846 to the Democratic National Committee.
The website reports Durst has also donated to Republican candidates, although most of his political donations leaned left.
Durst has long been suspected in the disappearance and presumed murder of his first wife in 1982 and the murder of his best friend in 2000. He was also arrested and tried in the 2001 killing and dismembering of his neighbor in 2003, but he was acquitted in that case after saying he dismembered the body because he didn't think anyone would believe he acted in self-defense.
Sunday's finale of "The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst," portions of which were reportedly filmed up to three years ago, contained a scene in which Durst went into a bathroom wearing a microphone.
Durst apparently did not think the mic was on before muttering, "What the hell did I do? Killed them all, of course."
Legal experts say that confession would likely be admissible evidence in a murder trial, so it would serve as a crucial piece of the prosecutors' cases against Durst.
