Rite Aid announced on Tuesday that it will open free testing sites in seven states where people can swab themselves to be tested for the coronavirus, Business Insider reports.
Rite Aid, which currently operates two testing sites in Pennsylvania, will add sites in New York, New Jersey, Ohio, Michigan, Connecticut, and Virginia. The current sites are located in Philadelphia and Harrisburg, and are drive-up, so patients can stay in their cars during the entire process, which has patients use self-swab nasal tests that are overseen by pharmacists from Rite Aid.
“Rite Aid is pleased to build on the success of our pilot site in Philadelphia with a new COVID-19 testing location in Harrisburg. We plan to have additional testing sites at stores across seven states in the coming weeks,” Rite Aid president and CEO Heyward Donigan said in a statement.
“Through our partnership with the White House Coronavirus Task Force, and with tremendous support from state and local officials, we will significantly expand COVID-19 testing to more than 5,000 tests daily in our country’s key hot spots when fully operational,” he continued. “We are incredibly proud of the outstanding work and commitment of all our Rite Aid associates both in our stores and at the testing sites who are providing an important and critical service to the communities we serve.”
Patients must register online and schedule an appointment before arriving to take a test, which is free for anyone who has met the criteria set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The new sites will stay open every day of the week, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and have an expected output of 200 tests per day.
