Following the release of the "Access Hollywood" tape in 2016, Mike Pence was said to be prepared to step in as the Republican Party's presidential nominee, The Atlantic is reporting.
The magazine attributed its information to a source present during a meeting called by Donald Trump to assess damage from the tape.
According to the source, Reince Priebus, then the party chairman and later Trump's chief of staff, said Pence and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice were prepared to take over the party's ticket.
However, an aide to Pence denied the vice president ever discussed the issue with the RNC and Priebus did not reply to requests for comment, the magazine said.
Still, Pence was shocked by the tape, the magazine noted. And his wife, Karen, was reportedly "disgusted" by it.
Trump is heard making lewd comments about women on the tape, The Hill noted.
