No matter how much the liberal media elites want to change the name of the Washington Redskins football team, only a fraction of the public agrees with them.
A recent poll found that just 14 percent of those surveyed want the team to change its name, down dramatically from a September poll that showed that 23 percent favored the name change,
Breitbart News reports.
In fact, since 1992, The Washington Post reports, football fans have never voted above 14 percent in favor of the Redskins changing their name in Associated Press/Gfk polls — it was just 7 percent in 1992 and 11 percent last year.
"After their failed efforts to steal our guns and open our borders, we now have another example of an increasingly bubbled and out-of-touch mainstream media failing to move the public-opinion needle," John Nolte wrote in Breitbart.
"The most important truth is that outside of a small group of American Indian race grifters, polls prove that the American Indian isn't offended by what elite palefaces demand they be offended by. People also know that in the state of Arizona, at Red Mesa High school, 99.3 percent of the students are American Indian and the name of their football team is, yes, the Redskins."
"The Redskins name still hasn’t been changed, so in that sense the policy is congruent with public opinion, but there definitely is a sense that the supporters of the team name are on the retreat," Columbia University statistics and political science professor Andrew Gelman
wrote in The Washington Post.
"As a political scientist, what interests me here is the contrast between public opinion, six to one against a change in name, and the politics."
However,
team owner Dan Snyder has bucked any effort to change the team's name and even appeared at a game in Phoenix with Navajo President Ben Shelly and his wife sitting in the owner's box next to him, wearing Redskins caps.
Even 58 percent of team players said the team should not change its name,
according to an ESPN poll, including 89 percent of Republicans, as opposed to 58 percent of Democrats and 53 percent of liberals.
"The American people understand that this obsession isn't based on principal but rather a mainstream media that is looking for a — if you'll pardon the expression — scalp. This is a power play, a game among insufferable elites to prove to themselves they still have power with a senseless notch in the "win" column," Nolte said.
Snyder said the team's name "captures the best of who we are and who we can be, by staying true to our history and honoring the deep and enduring values our name represents,"
WWL-TV reports.
The station notes that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said the Redskins' name is "presented in a way that honors Native Americans."
