Poll: Minorities Like Surveillance Cameras Even More Than Whites

New York City voters overwhelmingly support the increased use of security cameras in public areas, with the strongest support coming from blacks and Hispanics, according to a new poll.

The Quinnipiac University survey released Thursday found 82 percent support among Big Apple voters for more cameras, and 14 percent against. It is 80 percent to 16 percent among whites, 86 percent to 12 percent among African Americans, and 88 percent to 12 percent among Hispanics.

Women support greater surveillance, 86 percent to 11 percent, compared to 78 percent to 19 percent for men, the survey found.

“Most New Yorkers think another terrorist attack like the Boston Marathon bombing is likely,” said Maurice Carroll, director of the Connecticut university's polling institute. "Smile, you’re on a New York City surveillance camera, and voters would like to see more of them.”

New York City voters also approve, 75 p;ercent to 15 percent, of the way Mayor Michael Bloomberg is handling terror, much better than his overall job approval rating of 50 percent  to 42 percent, the survey found.

And voters believe, 79 percent to 14 percent, that the NYPD has been effective in combating terrorism, with that support coming from every group.

Quinnipiac University conducted the telephone survey of 1,082 New York City voters from May 14-20, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
