Most Americans say they sympathize with ongoing George Floyd protests taking place nationwide and disagree with President Donald Trump’s response to the demonstrations, according to a new poll.

A Reuters/Ipsos poll released Tuesday indicates that a majority of Americans agree with why people are protesting the death of a black man by a white police officer in Minneapolis.

Poll results show:

  • 73% of Americans polled say they support peaceful protests as a response to Floyd’s death.
  • 64% of Americans surveyed say they are sympathetic to peaceful protests.
  • 55% of Americans polled say they disapprove of Trump’s response to the protests.
  • 79% of Americans asked say property damage caused by some demonstrators undermines the original intent of the protest’s call for justice in Floyd’s death.

While most of the protests are taking place in big cities like New York City, Washington D.C., and Minneapolis, the poll found that people living in rural and suburban areas are supportive of the protests. Seven out of 10 people, who live in the suburbs, agree with the peaceful protests as a response to Floyd's death and a little more than half of people who live in rural areas say they are sympathetic to protesters.

Americans are divided on how they think the police are handling the protests with 43% expressing support for how the police are handling the protests and 47% disagreeing with police efforts. More Republicans think the police are doing a good job responding to protests than Democrats, according to the poll.

Reuters polled 1,004 American adults between June 1-2. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
