Hair for a Hair: Judge Orders Mom To Cut Off Daughter’s Ponytail

A Utah judge ordered a mother of a  to cut off her 13-year-old daughter’s ponytail in the courtroom as punishment after the girl and a friend lopped off a 3-year-old girl’s hair at a McDonald’s.

The state’s Sixth District juvenile judge, Scott Johansen, chose the eye-for-an-eye approach so Kaytlen Lopan could suffer the same fate as her toddler victim, the Deseret News reported.

Mindy Moss’ 3-year-old daughter was with family members at a McDonald’s in Price, Utah, where the two older girls asked if they could play with her hair. They ended up buying scissors at a nearby store and cut off "several inches" of the little girl’s locks.

Lopan's mother, Valerie Bruno, told the paper, “She definitely needed to be punished for what had happened. But I never dreamt it would be that much of a punishment.”

Johansen said Lopan’s behavior was “egregious,” according to the paper. He also ordered the girl’s 11-year-old friend to go to a salon and get her hair cut as short as his.

Bruno has filed an official complaint against the judge, the Deseret News reported.
