Poll: Most Say Snowden Acted Unethically

By    |   Wednesday, 13 August 2014 06:03 PM EDT

Slightly more than half of Americans believe Edward Snowden acted unethically when he leaked documents from the National Security Agency about its spying practices, according to a poll conducted for "60 Minutes" and Vanity Fair.

Fifty-four percent of those surveyed said Snowden did not act ethically, 27 percent said he did, and 19 percent said they don't know.

The poll was conducted on 1,017 adults nationwide June 11–15, 2014. No margin of error was given.

The government says Snowden stole 1.7 million documents, though Snowden said in a story in Wired magazine that the number is actually much lower.

Snowden fled to Hong Kong before revealing his leak and currently is in under temporary asylum in Russia. The public was divided on whether his actions were traitorous or patriotic, with opinions crossing party affiliation.
