Union leaders at The Plain Dealer in Cleveland say the newspaper is cutting about a third of its newsroom staff.
The Newspaper Guild says about 50 reporters, photographers and other guild-covered employees received layoff notices Wednesday.
Union leaders say they expect about 110 guild-covered employees to remain in the newsroom following the layoffs. Guild chairman Harlan Spector says the newspaper has not yet released a full list of those who lost their jobs.
A message seeking comment was left with the newspaper.
The Plain Dealer announced in April that it was cutting back home delivery of the newspaper to three days a week.
The newspaper is owned by New York-based Advance Publications Inc. It also will create a new digitally focused media company called Northeast Ohio Media Group.
