Petraeus: Improving Military Requires End to Sequestration

("The Cats Roundtable"/AM 970 The Answer)

The next president must restore some cuts made to the military budget and put an end to the threat of sequestration, according to retired Gen. David Petraeus.

Speaking on "The Cats Roundtable" Sunday radio show hosted by John Catsimatidis on AM 970 in New York, Petraeus said the United States has to "allow our military leaders to know how much they are going to have for a fiscal year in advance and allow them to make plans and then not to have dramatic changes to that during the year."

Petraus, who was is a former director of the Central Intelligence Agency, said there is no shortage of challenges for the next president to face internationally, and American forces will be very important in confronting them.

Concerning Iraq, Petraus said "There's no question in my mind that the Islamic State will be cleared from Mosul, although there is tough fighting ahead … But the question in many cases… has to do with politics … That is what has undone Iraq in the past where we got it back together … only tragically to see several years after … political forces tear that apart, reneging on commitments that were made, and then to see the Islamic State rise up from the ashes.”

Petraeus also said here are many reasons to be uncomfortable with Iranian actions, even though “By and large Iran has been adhering to the [nuclear] agreement as conceived.”

He spoke about the downside of the deal, mainly that it is "about the nuclear program only … it doesn't affect the missile program or [Iran's] support for terrorism."

Petraeus said another problematic element of the deal is Teheran has been given access to some $40 billion to $50 billion dollars in frozen assets and is also being reintegrated into the global economy, giving it even more funds to spread its anti-Western interests.
