Statues of famous people — and one animal — could replace removed likenesses of Confederate military leaders if several online petitions are successful.
The Hill put together a list of three celebrities whose fans want them to be honored with statues in various locations across the country.
Musician Missy Elliott. More than 31,000 people have signed a petition that calls for the removal of the Confederate Monument in Olde Towne Portsmouth, Virginia. The petition wants to see a statue of Elliott put in its place.
"Getting this statue put up will be a lot of work and you may ask yourself is it worth it? I say yes and ask you to join me in letting us work it. Together we can put white supremacy down, flip it and reverse it," the petition reads.
Musician Britney Spears. More than 6,500 people have put their names on a petition that asks the city of New Orleans to take down its Confederate statues and replace them with one of Spears, who hails from Kentwood, Louisiana.
"Do the right thing: Replace the Confederate statues with an actual Louisiana hero and influential human being, Britney Spears," reads the petition.
Snooty the Manatee. The world's oldest captive manatee died at age 69 in July. An online petition would like to see a Confederate statue in Bradenton, Florida taken down and replaced with one of Snooty.
"To honor Snooty's legacy as a positive icon in Bradenton, I propose that the negative symbol of racism and oppression that is the Confederate monument be relocated and replaced with a statue of Snooty the Manatee," reads the petition.
Several Confederate monuments have been taken down, or are slated to be taken down, in recent years because critics say they are reminders of slavery and racism.
The planned removal of a statue of Robert E. Lee in Charlottesville, Virginia led to violent riots there two weeks ago.
