GOP Lawmakers Subpoena Perez Emails

By    |   Thursday, 11 April 2013 03:21 PM EDT

In preparation for a potentially contentious Senate confirmation hearing, congressional Republicans have issued a subpoena for the private email account of Labor Secretary nominee Thomas Perez, over his role in a deal with attorneys for the city of St. Paul.

Lawmakers say that Perez used his private Verizon email account for official business as a civil rights attorney for the Justice Department, while brokering a deal with the Minnesota capital.

Perez made an offer that the Justice Department would not join private lawsuits claiming that the city provided false information to get $100 million in federal housing funds, if St. Paul dropped a Supreme Court case that would jeopardize an enforcement policy that the department uses in housing-discrimination cases, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Perez told congressional investigators when he met with them for a voluntary interview on March 22 that he didn’t “have any recollection of having communicated via personal email on this matter.”

After investigators found at least one email regarding the St. Paul deal in his private email account, Perez supplied one more. But House Oversight Committee chairman Rep. Darrell Issa, Judiciary Committee chairman Robert Goodlatte, and Sen. Chuck Grassley, the ranking member on the Senate judiciary committee issued the subpoena to ensure that there is nothing else that Perez has failed to turn over.
