Troops Overseas Read Stories to Kids Back Home

Thursday, 18 August 2011 09:31 AM EDT

A new Pentagon program allows for troops overseas to read storybooks directly to their children via videophone, reports Commentary.

“United Through Reading” has outfitted operating bases, ships, and military facilities around the world with high-tech camera equipment. The cameras enable soldiers to read to their children from thousands of miles away from children’s books they have brought from home or were donated to the facilities’ libraries as part of the program.

The program helps to mitigate the separation that affects service members and their families back home.

“People whose sons and daughters were born when they were abroad will talk about how their children recognized their voices in a room full of crowded people because they had heard them read every night, even while they were away,” reports Commentary. “For parents, it’s reassuring to know they can still read that bedtime story to their son or their little girl.”

“United Through Reading” is just one of the ways the military has been working to progress socially in order to improve the lives and morale of U.S. troops and their families, Pentagon officials say.
