The United States continues to lead the world in coronavirus infections even after a spike of new cases reported in Italy, becoming the only country to surpass 100,000 confirmed cases Friday afternoon.

The U.S. has the sixth-most fatalies to date (1,543), while having more than 100,392 infections for a confirmed-case death rate of 1.5%, according to Woldometer, which compiles the data from Johns Hopkins University and recent media reports.

Italy has recorded the most deaths of any country, with 9,134, while Spain suffered 4,934 deaths, and China, where the global pandemic started, has reported 3,292 deaths. Iran (2,378) and France (1,995) have lost more lives than the U.S. to date.

Worldwide, more than 590,038 people have contracted the virus and around 132,447 have recovered. With 26,939 deaths, the global community has a confirmed-case death rate of 4.6%.
