Bloomberg Says He'd Veto Proposal for NYPD Monitor

Wednesday, 20 March 2013 12:48 PM EDT

Mayor Michael Bloomberg is urging New York City Council members to oppose a plan for an inspector general at the Police Department.

Bloomberg said Wednesday he would veto the proposal if it passed. He says it would make the city less safe.

City Council Speaker Christine Quinn says she expects to have enough votes to override a veto.

The proposal has been championed by civil liberties advocates troubled by some of the department's practices. They include widespread spying on Muslims, detailed in a series of stories by The Associated Press. Critics also oppose the extensive use of the tactic known as stop and frisk.

The city says the police department already gets enough oversight from a civilian complaint board and other entities.
