NLRB Judge Finds CNN Violated Worker Rights

By    |   Monday, 24 November 2008 12:30 PM EST

WASHINGTON — CNN America Inc. violated the rights of more than 250 workers at the network's bureaus in Washington and New York City, according to a decision from an administrative law judge for the National Labor Relations Board.

The network must rehire 110 workers with back pay, according to the decision, which the NLRB released Monday.

CNN violated the National Labor Relations Act when it terminated a subcontracting pact with Team Video Services, whose employees were represented by the Locals 11 and 31 of the National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians-CWA, said a release about the decision on PR Newswire. The network also discriminated against TVS employees who sought to continue working at CNN bureaus, it said.

The discrimination was intended to avoid having to recognize and bargain with the employees' collective-bargaining representatives, according to the judge’s order, which ends more than five years of NLRB action.

The 169-page decision ordered, among other things:

  • Reinstatement and full back pay for more than 110 employees, including training, if necessary.

  • Recognition of the unions in New York and Washington.

  • A cease-and-desist order to prohibit CNN from infringing on workers' rights under labor law in the future.
