Gingrich: Gitmo Deal Was 'Total Surrender' to Terrorists

By    |   Wednesday, 04 June 2014 07:21 PM EDT

"Crossfire" co-host Newt Gingrich opened Wednesday's show saying he wanted to defend the Obama administration from any suspicion they negotiated with terrorists in freeing Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl.

"This deal is a total surrender to the terrorists," Gingrich said on the CNN program. "There was no negotiation."

The former Republican House speaker then showed a video released by those who had held Bergdahl for five years. He described "American Special Forces coming to shake the terrorists' hands in the terrorists' territory, finishing a deal on the terrorists' terms."

He next showed video of the five Taliban leaders the United States released in exchange for Bergdahl as they reunited with their families.

"It is a very different video of a very different greeting," Gingrich said, adding that the five Taliban leaders got "a hero's welcome."

"No wonder the Taliban are celebrating," Gingrich said. "These videos clearly show they believe they won."

Gingrich's liberal co-host, Stephanie Cutter, said the videos were clearly propaganda, and scolded Gingrich for "buying into that."

"Newt, you're certainly not new to the idea of propaganda," Cutter said. "And that was propaganda, what you just showed there."
