New York Times managing editor Clifford Levy is warning the newspaper's reporters not to be fooled into making damaging remarks.

He posted this notice on Twitter:

Levy became suspicious when newsroom personnel received emails requesting interviews from someone who claimed to be a college student. He wrote that he is concerned "this could be a ruse by someone trying to trick unwary Times journalists into unguarded or damaging statements. (No doubt you recall the hidden-camera ploy used recently on a CNN producer.)"

In the CNN case, John Bonifield, a supervisor producer, was seen and heard on a video talking about the Russia investigation.

"I just feel like they don't really have it, but they want to keep digging," he said. "And so I think the president is probably right to say, like, look, you are witch hunting me. Like, you have no smoking gun, you have no real proof."

The CNN video was posted online by James O'Keefe's Project Veritas.
