Matt Drudge, who has operated The Drudge Report for nearly 20 years, believes the sharply divided political opinions that dominate the airwaves merely reflect the divisions that exist all across America.
In a rare interview with
WTOP radio in his Washington, D.C., hometown, Drudge pushed back against the idea his website is slanted toward a "partisan point of view."
It’s "partisan to news," he said. He also countered his interviewer's observation that opinion-driven media only heightens anger and division.
"But the country is divided," he said. "All of these polls are always divided. Capitol Hill is divided. How can you say the airwaves or the website should not be divided? We are."
"This is a vibrant era of media," he said. "This is exciting. This is not old, this is not boring … the more people involved the better."
Drudge said he still enjoys going "where the heat is," though he admitted it can also land him "in trouble." But he noted the media landscape has changed in the last two decades – and said his role has gotten harder.
"It's a little psychotic, the news business right now because everybody's doing everything," he said.
Drudge also praised the nation's capital for being "so vibrant."
"This is the center, this is the heartbeat of the nation, for good or bad," he said, predicting upcoming elections could leave things exactly as they are.
"Maybe the elections tell us [Americans] don't like change," he said.
