Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade will get stepped up security from the New York Police after Islamic State terrorists published a guide on how to use trucks to kill people on crowded streets.
The guide, in the latest edition of the ISIS's English language magazine Rumiyah, described the traditional, nationally televised parade as an "excellent target," noted the New York Daily News. The magazine said "vehicle attacks are one of the most effective weapons in the terrorist arsenal."
"Though being an essential part of modern life, very few actually comprehend the deadly and destructive capability of the motor vehicle and its capacity of reaping large numbers of casualties if used in a premeditated manner," the terrorist magazine said.
Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel drove a truck into crowds of people celebrating Bastille Day in Nice, France, on July 14, killing 84 people and injuring dozens more, the Mirror reported. Police eventually shot and killed Bouhlel.
"This is what they usually do before any big event, especially Fourth of July, Thanksgiving Day Parade, New Year's Eve," New York Police Commissioner James O'Neill said of the threat, according to the Daily News. "But we have to sift through the threats to see what's credible so we're in the process of assessing that now."
John Miller, the department's deputy commissioner of intelligence and counterterrorism, told WABC-TV that officials have implemented precautionary measures for such an attack.
Despite the ISIS threat, Miller told WABC-TV that New Yorkers and visitors should still attend the family-oriented parade, scheduled for next week and that he attends every year.
"The NYPD took a very proactive stance," Miller said, according to the Daily News. "We do get feedback. We do get calls. We run those leads down. To date, nothing that we found overly concerning but we encourage them to keep calling us – and we'll renew those calls based on this latest threat."
