Fed. Lawsuit Filed over Maine Labor Mural Removal

Friday, 01 April 2011 06:55 PM EDT

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — A federal lawsuit has been filed over Maine Gov. Paul LePage's decision to remove a mural about the state's labor history from the Labor Department.

The lawsuit filed Friday in U.S. District Court seeks to confirm the mural's current location, ensure that it's adequately preserved, and ultimately to restore it to the Labor Department building in Augusta.

The lawsuit was filed on behalf of six plaintiffs: One organized labor representative, one workplace safety official, three artists and an attorney.

LePage contends the mural depicting labor history overlooks the contributions of entrepreneurs.

His office had no immediate comment on the lawsuit. But spokeswoman Adrienne Bennett says the mural "remains safe and secure, awaiting transfer to a suitable venue for public display."
