NY Rep. Peter King: Rand Paul Perpetuating 'Lie'

By    |   Wednesday, 31 July 2013 07:14 PM EDT

Republican Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky extended an olive branch to New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie on Wednesday, but the likelihood of a peace accord between Paul and GOP Rep. Peter King of New York seems far less likely.

King took to CNN's "The Situation Room" on Wednesday to continue the attack he began on Sunday against Paul, who has been fighting against foreign aid for Egypt and elsewhere.

"He's perpetuating this big lie, talking about pork and somehow trying to demean Gov. Christie because he fought so hard for his state, or me, because I fought so hard for mine," King told host Wolf Blitzer.

Paul voted against relief aid for Hurricane Sandy states, saying he wanted offsets in spending elsewhere to help pay for it. He accused Christie of being part of a "gimme, gimme" group for wanting the aid.

"Aid to Egypt has nothing to do with aid to Long Island or New Jersey. They're two separate issues and [Paul] should know the difference between Egypt, Long Island, and New York," King said. "Sen. Paul claims to be a great friend of Israel, but yesterday the ambassador to Israel … said that continuing American aid to Egypt is essential to maintain the peace process and maintain the Egyptian-Israeli peace agreement that was negotiated under President Carter over 30 years ago."

The "so-called principles" of Paul, Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, and others are an "isolationist trend" that will damage the United States, King said, adding that Paul's praise for NSA secrets leaker Edward Snowden showed a lack of understanding of America's true enemies.

King said he and Christie understand that terrorists are trying to kill Americans. "We're not going to pander and stoke up fears and paranoia the way he's been doing by talking about spying and snooping, which is only in his mind."
