While the U.S. budgets always need to trim the fat on American dollars being doled out , skimping on stimulus checks to the American people is not the place to cut corners, according to Rep. Jeff Van Drew, R-N.J., on Newsmax TV.
"There are times when you spend money, and there are times when you don't," Van Drew told Wednesday's "Spicer & Co." "You never waste money.
"I don't consider taking care of the American people and making sure that they're getting the funding they need to survive, I don't consider that a waste of money."
Van Drew told guest host Rob Schmitt he supports Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., calling for fiscal responsibility, but the spending allocated in the coronavirus relief portion of the omnibus spending bill is much-needed, and more should be approved.
"We waste some money without question in the United States of America in the way that we spend in our budgets," Van Drew told Schmitt. "This is not one of them.
"What is kind of humorous to me and ironic: When it comes to helping our American people, then we don't want to spend, then it's a 'waste,' then it's 'terrible.'"
"But when we're spending money all of the world and doing a whole lot of other things, and wasting money, then it's supposed to make sense?
"Spend money where you should; don't spend it where you shouldn't."
Van Drew supports President Donald Trump's call to up the stimulus checks to individuals to $2,000, and he backs the added call to strip out some of the waste in the annual budget, particularly in the dollars being sent to foreign countries.
"I believe we do need fiscal stability and there are areas where we can be more careful," he said.
"All the money we spend all around the world, I think we can absolutely tighten that belt and that we should."
