Recently, there have been growing concerns of possible biological attacks on U.S. soil, and while the federal government is charged with stopping any attack, it is good old-fashioned American entrepreneurship that may save the day. CEO of Aethlon Medical, is one such entrepreneur. Aethlon created the Hemopurifier, a medical device that cleans the blood of toxins by selectively targeting and removing infectious viruses from the entire circulatory system before cell and organ infection begins — similar to a filter.
Joyce said of the Hemopurifier, “It’s better than just an air filter; it actually cleans your blood.” The Hemopurifier may be the most advanced technology currently available on the market. It also may be the only broad-spectrum countermeasure to fight any viral threat. Joyce said it has safely been tested in 68 people so far.
The Obama administration has recently announced a new biodefense plan that will fund “platform technologies” designed to combat biological weapons in an attack. The idea is to find responses to threats from infectious diseases. Single-target drugs and vaccines have proven to be clinically problematic and very expensive to develop so the new multi-use focus is the federal government’s priority.
America’s medical entrepreneurs have already spent considerable personal time and money developing solutions to this growing problem and welcomed the new federal spending initiative designed to speed up the research and development of such a solution.
The benefits of finding a device that would be able to fight or remove any virus from the human body — infectious or man-made — are obvious and would have a global impact for the company or individual that discovers the technology.
The multi-use device or vaccine could be used for a variety of illnesses from the common cold and kidney failure to HIV and a terrorist made biological attack.
The Hemopurifier has also promising results in reducing viral loads in patients infected with hepatitis C, HIV, and even cancer. “The device removes and concentrates viruses from the entire circulatory system and could literally save thousands of lives effected by bioterror,” said Joyce.
Since 9/11, the Bush and Obama administrations have made funding for first responders a priority. Funds have been spent to on more ambulances, more emergency equipment, the latest communications devices and more personnel. But little has been done to help academics, universities, and medical entrepreneurs to find a way to actually treat the human body from a wide-spread biological or chemical attack.
There were just too many threats to keep up with and develop a remedy for and too few researchers doing it. A single-target vaccine could exceed $1 billion to develop.
The Hemopurifier may be just the biotechnology needed to combat a bioterror attack.
