More background checks were conducted for gun purchases last month than any other April in history, according to FBI figures.
April also extended the streak of record-setting months to 12, meaning the FBI has performed more background checks every month since last May than the same month in previous years.
The FBI data shows that 2,145,865 checks were performed in April, up from 1,711,340 last April. Last month's figure was the lowest number of any month this year, although the first three months had numbers at 2.5 million and above.
The FBI does point out, however, there is not "a one-to-one correlation … between a firearm background check and a firearm sale."
Still, the data is reflective of sales within the gun industry.
President Barack Obama announced tighter restrictions on gun sales last month. His administration has taken several other steps to further regulate the gun industry, including
executive actions in January.
Hillary Clinton, the leading Democrat in the race for president,
said gun control will be one of her priorities if she wins the presidency.
