John Fund: 'Data Hub' Adds to Obamacare's Challenges

By    |   Tuesday, 23 July 2013 12:10 PM EDT

Obamacare's goal to catalogue almost everything about the lives of U.S. citizens in a new "data hub" is yet another reason why the healthcare plan won't work as designed, opponents say.

"The last time the federal government tried an enormous computer integration of health records, it was between the Veterans Administration and the Department of Defense. They tried to do it starting in 1998, and 2013 in February this year, they threw up their hands and said, 'This isn't going to work. We crashed and burned,'" National Review columnist John Fund said.

"The data hub is a brand-new federal program that's going to take records from everybody, Social Security, IRS, Veterans Affairs, records on your viewers, and it's going to put them in one place and certain people will have access to it," Fund explained Tuesday on "Fox & Friends."

Compounding the issue, Fund said, is that access to this information will come from "navigators," employed to help people enroll in the healthcare system.

"There will be no criminal background checks on these people. None. So let's say someone has been convicted of identity theft. They could get hired as a navigator. We could have identity-theft experts going through people's records," Fund said. "I think it's a serious problem. Also, they don't even have to have a high school education."

"Let's say if it does work, we're going to be exposed to potential security issues. If it doesn't work, more money goes down the drain and more people have false hope," Fund added.

Radio talk-show host Laura Ingraham weighed in on the topic as well during her Tuesday show, asking, "Given all of the abuses we've seen at the IRS and with careless use of personal data from U.S. taxpayers, who feels good about this?"

"I don't think this dog hunts,” Ingraham said. "People don't want it. People have good instincts. Common sense usually kicks in at some point."
