FedEx Boss: Transportation Infrastructure Needs Massive Upgrade

America's transportation infrastructure is in dire need of improvements, says Bill Logue, CEO of the FedEx freight division.

"We must begin to address aging infrastructure across every mode of transportation," he said Monday at the National Industrial Transportation League conference in Houston, Forbes reports.

For example, the Federal Highway Administration predicts that auto and truck traffic will double between 2010 and 2040, Logue said. Improvements in the road system are "vital to economic growth, the creation of jobs, and access to goods and services."

When it comes to aviation, the air traffic control system is based on design specifics that "have not changed since the 1950s," Logue said. The nation's 20 top airports all will suffer major crowding in the next 10 years, he said.

The seaport system needs an upgrade too, Logue says: "Many of the nation's ports are already experiencing congestion and delay." And they will soon have to handle bigger container ships.

Government regulation adds to the problem, Logue said, adding that foreign air shipments sometimes need more than 30 documents.
