Dr. Anthony Fauci favors reopening schools under the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines.
He made his comments Thursday on MSNBC’s "Morning Joe.”
“I would back the CDC recommendations because that is really based on data … we need to try and get the children back to school and that's the goal of President (Joe) Biden that in the next 100 days to get the K to eights back in school,” said Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
CDC officials said in a study published on Tuesday that schools should resume in-person learning as soon as possible if social distancing and masks are properly enforced.
Fox News noted teachers’ unions have resisted plans to reopen schools in areas like Montclair, N.J. and Chicago.
White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain was questioned by CNN’s Erin Burnett on Tuesday about how the unions' position impacts the recommendations in the CDC study.
"I don't think unions are overruling studies," Klain responded. "I think what you're seeing is schools that haven't made the investments to keep the students safe.
"Most of the teachers I talked to, they want to be back in the classroom. They just want to know that it's safe, and we as a country should make the investments to make it safe.”
